Welcome to my Externship

My internship for the next month will be at High Tech Middle. I will be working with Ms.Deanna, who is the drama teacher. I'm excited to work with her because I feel that I can learn to be more assertive when it comes to talking to people. Also receiving great advice when it comes to theater and acting. I believe that she is going to be an incredible mentor to work with. As far as my project, I'm still not entirely sure on what my project is. But I believe it will have something to do, with working with the kids in the classroom. And possibly studying different monologues.

Well today, is my first day of internship, WOOO!! It was so awesome. At first, I was very nervous, because I didn't know how to approach the kids. But once I had the hang of it, it was pretty cool. The kids were so nice and energetic. All of the classes are prepping for their spoken word performances, next week. Hearing all of the poems, surprised me, because so many of them are focusing on all kinds of issues. Which was very shocking and cool to me. It was also awesome to me because I just did spoken word for a project last year, so I was able to give the kids great advice on volume, pace, and sentence structure.

Today is the third day, of my externship. So far it's been great. I'm really enjoying working with the kids. They're still preparing and practicing for spoken word performance next week. Doing this externship so far has helped me be more open and assertive but in a good way. At school, when I'm in the classroom I tend to be quiet and not really talk when it comes to class discussions. But being at my externship is really helping to talk more. Because sooner or later, I'm going to be graduating and being in the world. So my assertiveness and being more open when it comes to discussions is really going to help me in the real world.

Today marks week two of my externship. So far it's been great. Being here these two weeks, it's been really cool but, weird in a sense. What I mean by that is, my externship is at my old middle school. So me being a senior, and graduating in less than a month, seems so surreal to me. It's almost like I see my own reflection, and brings back memories of me being in middle school. It's really bittersweet for me. But besides from that, my mentor is awesome. Seeing her teach and giving direction on different staging skills, is really helping me when it comes to theater. Also seeing her great amount of patience with the kids (laughs). Because like I said before, all day she is teaching 8th grade. And sometimes it can be hard dealing with crazy amounts of energy, and different personalities, all day. So seeing her be super professional, is also a great mental note when it comes to a theater or any type of job.

During my time at externship, I have been advocating for myself by, helping the students with their two new projects. For their upcoming exhibition. The first half of the team is acting out children books that they have created in humanities class. I'm helping them by directing where they need to be as far as roles for actors, how is the story going to be presented on stage (Blocking), and different music effects that will flow well with the stories. While the other half of the 8th graders are working on speeches, that deal with different issues in our society today. My job is helping them find their voice when it comes to delivery and projection. Also helping them find their passion and pace when it comes to certain parts in their speech. I think the hardest thing for me is talking, and opening up, because at times I'm kinda shy. But so far it's been going great, and I see myself opening up more to the students.

Well, today marks the last week. It's been really great, and awesome at my externship. My mentor has been amazing. Working with her and the kids has been really fun. As for my mentor, it's really weird to see her teaching, considering the fact, her first love was just acting. She went to a community college for theater, which eventually led her into an Acting Conservatory. She studied there for three years. While studying she always had a love for acting, but eventually fell in love with teaching theater. She then met Larry, one of the founders for High Tech. And asked her to start, a drama program, at High Tech Middle. Being at my externship has helped me so much when it comes to my passion and education for acting. Well after I graduate, I plan on going to Grossmont College for two years. And eventually, transfer into a four-year or an acting school. As far as teaching, I'm not entirely too sure If I would ever want to teach theater. But it's still a possibility. To be honest I don't know, what will happen in the future. But I know that my future will be on a right path to success.
